California Launches Application Portal for Workforce Pell Grant Program

The California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) has launched a state application portal for the new federal Workforce Pell (WFP) Grant Program. The portal opened on October 21, allowing higher education institutions and career technical education providers to apply for state authorization to participate.

Under California Senate Bill 135, CSAC is designated to determine if an institution's short-term program meets state and federal requirements. After state eligibility is confirmed, institutions submit information to the U.S. Department of Education for final approval. The WFP grant significantly expands federal financial aid for short-term, high-quality workforce training programs that lead to in-demand occupations.

The launch of this portal marks a significant step in California's implementation efforts, enabling the identification of eligible training programs. Institutions are encouraged to attend a CSAC webinar on October 20 for detailed information on portal requirements and technical guidance.

Governor Gavin Newsom stated the program creates new pathways to well-paying careers. The grant, designed for programs 8 to 15 weeks long, can help students quickly gain specialized skills for high-skill, high-wage jobs and is also available to individuals with bachelor's degrees.
