California Politics Heavily Influenced by Top Donors, New Index Shows

A new California Oligarch Index has revealed that a select group of the state's wealthiest individuals and corporations wield considerable influence over California's political landscape. The index highlights how a tiny fraction of donors accounts for a disproportionately large share of political spending.

According to the index, the top 99 individual and corporate political donors in California spent approximately $5.8 billion on campaigns and lobbying between 2005 and 2024. This figure surpasses the combined spending of the bottom 99.9% of the state's residents, businesses, and organizations.

The index was created by the Social Movement Support Lab, a Colorado-based organization focused on social and racial justice. Jim Freeman, a civil rights lawyer and founder of the lab, stated that major corporations and wealthy individuals often lack transparency regarding their political activities, making it difficult to track their influence.

Leading spenders identified by the index include Chevron, DaVita, the California Association of Realtors, and Philip Morris/Altria. Their expenditures have largely targeted efforts to oppose environmental regulations, proposed controls on dialysis clinics, rent control measures, and cigarette tax increases.

The research also indicated that many of these large corporate donors share common political interests. They frequently invest in pro-business lobbying groups that oppose initiatives aimed at increasing worker wages, raising taxes, or implementing stricter business regulations.
