California Property Tax Postponement Program Filing Period Opens

California State Controller Malia M. Cohen announced on October 1, 2026, that applications are now being accepted for the Property Tax Postponement (PTP) Program for the 2026-2027 tax year. This program allows eligible seniors, individuals who are blind, or those with disabilities to defer payment of property taxes on their primary residence.

The PTP Program aims to provide financial relief to homeowners who may struggle with their property tax obligations. Last year, nearly $7.7 million in property taxes were postponed through the program. To qualify, applicants must meet criteria including being at least 62 years old, blind, or disabled, owning and occupying their home as a primary residence, having a total household income of $57,002 or less in 2025, and possessing at least 40 percent equity in the property.

Applications will be processed in the order they are received, with the final filing deadline set for February 10, 2027. Funding for the program is limited, and eligible homeowners are encouraged to apply promptly. Approved participants will have a lien placed on their property until the deferred taxes are paid in full.

Further details and application forms are available by contacting the State Controller's office directly. The program is administered by the Controller's office, which oversees California's financial resources.
