California Waste Solutions Deploys AI Sorters to Aid Oakland's Illegal Dumping Fight
California Waste Solutions is integrating AI-powered optical sorters into its Oakland recycling facilities. This technology aims to support the city's efforts to combat illegal waste dumping and improve the quality of recycled materials.
Oakland, Calif. – California Waste Solutions (CWS) is enhancing its operations in Oakland by implementing artificial intelligence (AI) powered optical sorters at its recycling facilities. This technological upgrade directly supports the City of Oakland's new program designed to detect and address illegal waste dumping more effectively.
The city recently launched the Aerbits program, which utilizes AI to analyze aerial imagery and identify abandoned trash sites without waiting for resident reports. Concurrently, CWS, Oakland's long-term recycling contractor, is installing new EverestLabs AI scanners at its 10th Street facility and increasing Pellenc optical sorting capacity at its San Jose plant.
According to the company, the new AI scanners monitor material entering the processing line and report what is still destined for disposal. The system counts items, records the burden on the conveyor belt, and indicates how much of the belt remains exposed, helping operators identify when a line is running too deep or unevenly for efficient recovery.
California Waste Solutions has utilized optical sorters at its U.S. facilities since the mid-2000s. The company states that the investment in AI technology improves both the quantity of recovered items and the purity of the recycled material. Company representatives have emphasized that reducing illegal dumping leads directly to higher-quality recycling outcomes.
