Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 to Remove Weapon Bloom Mechanic
Infinity Ward has announced that "weapon bloom" will be entirely removed from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. The change aims to give players greater control over weapon behavior and reduce random bullet spread.

Developer Infinity Ward has confirmed that the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will completely eliminate the "weapon bloom" mechanic. This decision, revealed in an official introduction video released by the studio, intends to give players more direct control over their weapon's performance and reduce the element of randomness that has been a point of contention in previous titles.
Weapon bloom is a feature in shooter games where the reticle expands during player movement or rapid firing, causing bullets to potentially deviate randomly around the intended aiming point. This mechanic is commonly used to limit weapon stability, particularly in multiplayer scenarios. In Modern Warfare 4, this random element is being replaced by a more predictable recoil system where the weapon's kick directly corresponds to the bullet's trajectory.
Cody Pierson, a weapon designer for the game, explained that the change offers players an "unprecedented level of control" over their weapons. "There will no longer be randomness in the game. You will no longer lose a gunfight because of uncontrollable, unknown factors. Your success will depend entirely on your decisions and skill level," Pierson stated.
Further refinements have also been made to other visual aspects, including muzzle flash and depth of field. For instance, an invisible central area has been added to muzzle flash effects to prevent target obstruction or distraction. The depth of field effects have also been adjusted to more closely mimic real-world vision, aiming to improve target identification.
