Cambiotics begins clinical trial on PFAS reduction in firefighters
Copenhagen-based Cambiotics has enrolled the first participant in a study testing whether the probiotic strain 46-SL1 can help reduce PFAS levels in individuals with high occupational exposure.
Cambiotics ApS has launched its first human clinical trial to evaluate the effectiveness of its probiotic strain, 46-SL1, in facilitating the elimination of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The study focuses on a cohort of firefighters, a professional group documented to have high levels of exposure to these persistent chemical compounds.
The research is structured as a 2 x 12-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial. By comparing the probiotic supplement against a placebo in participants with recurring PFAS exposure, the company aims to determine if the bacterial strain can support the body’s natural removal processes.
PFAS, often referred to as "forever chemicals" due to their resistance to degradation, have become a global public health concern. While existing research has linked high PFAS levels to various health risks, medical interventions to reduce these substances in the human body remain limited, making this trial a significant step in identifying potential dietary mitigation strategies.
