Cambridge Heavy Industries developing desktop fusion device
Cambridge Heavy Industries, a startup based in Massachusetts, has built a compact, laser-powered fusion device aimed at accelerating the adoption of fusion power.

Fusion power is typically associated with large industrial facilities, but Cambridge Heavy Industries, located near MIT, has developed a device designed to fit on a desktop.
The company has been operating discreetly in "stealth mode" from a small laboratory. CEO Yun Kai provided TechCrunch with an exclusive first look at the technology the company has been developing.
"We deliberately built a small modular reactor. It’s tiny, it’s benchtop," Kai stated during a video call. "Because it's small, it makes everything easier."
The compact size has allowed Cambridge Heavy to experiment and iterate its solutions rapidly. Kai estimates that the small modular nature could enable 50 to 80 experiments, speeding up the development process compared to larger facilities.
