Camurus begins Phase 2b clinical trial for monthly weight-loss injection

Swedish pharmaceutical firm Camurus has commenced a Phase 2b study evaluating the efficacy of its monthly semaglutide depot, CAM2056, for the treatment of obesity.

3 November 2026

Lund-based pharmaceutical company Camurus has enrolled and dosed the first patient in its LUNAR-2 clinical trial, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase 2b study. The trial aims to assess the safety and efficacy of CAM2056, a subcutaneous depot formulation of semaglutide designed for once-monthly administration in patients with overweight or obesity.

The trial follows earlier Phase 1b data which suggested that the monthly depot could achieve weight loss and glucose control metrics comparable to or exceeding those of existing weekly semaglutide treatments. By utilizing a depot technology, the drug is designed to provide sustained release, potentially simplifying treatment regimens for patients who currently rely on more frequent dosing schedules.

Camurus is expanding its investigation into higher dosage levels over an extended duration in this study to determine the drug's long-term viability in the competitive weight management market. The outcome of this trial will be a critical indicator for the company as it seeks to position its proprietary formulation against established GLP-1 receptor agonist therapies.
