Canada Nickel's Crawford Project Reaches Final Federal Assessment Decision Stage
Impact Assessment Agency of Canada has submitted its final report to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change. A decision on the Crawford Nickel Project is expected within 30 days.
Canada Nickel Company Inc. has advanced its Crawford Nickel Project to the final stage of the federal impact assessment process, the company announced on July 21, 2026. The Impact Assessment Agency of Canada has submitted its final impact assessment report to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change.
The Minister's Decision Statement is expected within approximately 30 days. This marks a significant step, making Crawford the first mining project to reach this final stage under Canada's amended Impact Assessment Act of 2019.
"This milestone reflects years of technical work, rigorous environmental planning, and meaningful engagement with Indigenous Nations. We appreciate the work of the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada and all those who have contributed to advancing Crawford through Canada's modernized Impact Assessment process," said Canada Nickel CEO Mark Selby. The company anticipates the Minister's Decision Statement and aims to progress towards a construction decision in 2027.
The Crawford project, located in Ontario's Critical Minerals Corridor, is projected to be the Western World's largest nickel sulphide project. It is also expected to support a potential zero-carbon industrial cluster in the Timmins Nickel District. Canada Nickel stated its commitment to responsible development, Indigenous partnerships, and delivering economic benefits to Canada.
