Canada's Defence Boom Creates Divide Among SMEs

Canada is entering a period of sustained growth in its defence sector, creating a significant window of opportunity for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). According to analysis by the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC), this boom is leading to a three-tiered landscape for SMEs. Some firms are successfully scaling to meet increased demand, others are balancing existing civilian markets with emerging defence opportunities, and a third group is preparing to enter the sector.

Barriers to growth identified in the BDC's study include tight production capacity, complex regulatory and technical requirements, and limited access to capital. This results in many defence-focused SMEs already operating at or near full capacity, while those not yet engaged in the sector risk being left behind. SMEs in the defence sector are diverse, with concentrations found in IT, manufacturing, professional services, and construction.

While defence-heavy SMEs report strong growth outlooks, they face challenges such as long sales cycles and difficulties in securing necessary financing. The BDC notes that 58% of these firms are seeking equity investment, often for amounts exceeding $1 million. SMEs with less defence-specific business are more frequently seeking working capital loans and lines of credit.

Many new entrants are keen to join the defence industry, bringing expertise from fields like IT, engineering, construction, and vehicle manufacturing. However, meeting defence-specific requirements poses a primary obstacle for these potential newcomers. The BDC's analysis underscores that navigating this complex and regulated market successfully will require significant scaling efforts from participating companies.
