Canada's Development Bank: AI Offers Opportunities for SMEs

The Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) has published guidance aimed at illuminating the opportunities Artificial Intelligence (AI) presents for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). The publication highlights how AI can help businesses reduce costs, increase efficiency, and improve employee satisfaction.

Samuel Easto-Lefebvre, Senior Business Advisor at BDC Advisory Services, notes that key advantages of AI include the automation of tasks, freeing up employees for higher-value activities and addressing labor shortages. AI can also reduce monotonous tasks, enhancing employee engagement, and lower maintenance costs by predicting equipment failures. Furthermore, AI can improve customer support and product recommendations.

The guide also addresses the risks associated with AI. These include privacy concerns, particularly with generative AI, and ethical issues such as the potential for biased or inaccurate outputs. The cost and complexity of AI implementation are also factors to consider.

Easto-Lefebvre advises businesses not to wait for regulations to evolve but to use AI with awareness and precaution. Examples of AI application include generating product descriptions for marketing and creating visual content, which can be cost-effective for limited budgets.
