Canadian Legislator Reads Out Apparent AI Prompt Instruction in Floor Speech
A Canadian legislator unintentionally read out an instruction from an AI language model during a legislative speech. The incident gained traction on social media.
Bill Oliver, a member of the legislative assembly of New Brunswick, appeared to read word-for-word an instruction from an AI language model during a recent floor speech. "Here is a more natural, flowing version of that section that reads like a legislative speech rather than a series of short points," Oliver stated, a phrase commonly used by AI to offer stylistic alternatives.
The legislator was discussing the potential dangers of advocacy offices creating unrealistic citizen expectations. However, instead of delivering his prepared remarks, he recited the AI's suggestion for how to phrase the section.
The incident, which occurred in July, began circulating online and has recently drawn mainstream media attention in Canada. The Toronto Star characterized the event as indicative of a "growing divide in our society: between the elites, who are only too happy to delegate their duties to the Borg; and the masses, who find this objectionable."
This occurrence highlights the increasing presence of AI tools in various professional settings and the potential for errors when their outputs are not carefully reviewed before public use.
