Cancer Survivor Opens Hotworx Fitness Franchise in Chicago
Gwynda Jones has opened a Hotworx fitness franchise in downtown Chicago, marking a new entrepreneurial chapter after surviving a rare cancer diagnosis. She is utilizing retirement savings to fund the venture.

Gwynda Jones launched a Hotworx franchise in downtown Chicago in 2023, embarking on an entrepreneurial journey after a significant health battle. Previously, Jones spent 30 years in corporate roles, including at PepsiCo, before experiencing a heart attack and stroke in 2013 that led to her disability.
While Jones recovered, her previous demanding role requiring extensive travel was no longer feasible. She explored other avenues and discovered Hotworx, a 24/7 fitness studio franchise that combines workouts with infrared sauna technology. The concept appealed to her, requiring a small staff and virtual instruction.
Her franchise plans were initially delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Shortly after, Jones received a dire diagnosis of a rare, aggressive cancer with a prognosis of only six months to live. She began chemotherapy and simultaneously pursued holistic treatments, including infrared therapy, which aligned with the Hotworx model.
Jones experienced an unexpected positive response to her treatments, with her lab work showing improvement instead of deterioration. Subsequent scans revealed that her tumors had significantly shrunk, and one had disappeared entirely. Doctors advised her to continue her current regimen.
With her health restored, Jones proceeded with opening the Hotworx studio. The $500,000 venture was largely funded by her retirement savings accumulated over 38 years. Her daughter, Monica Nia Jones, is also involved in the business.
