Canon expands EOS R lens lineup with six new releases

Canon is adding six new optics to its RF lens lineup, aiming to bolster the ecosystem for its EOS R mirrorless full-frame cameras. The new additions are designed to utilize the RF mount's technical architecture, which facilitates high-speed data communication between the lens and the camera body.

The 2019 product rollout includes the "f/2.8 trinity" series: the RF 15-35mm, RF 24-70mm, and RF 70-200mm zoom lenses. These are intended to cover standard professional photography requirements. The lineup is further expanded by two 85mm prime lenses designed for portraiture, including a model featuring an specialized optical smoothing effect, and an all-purpose 10x zoom lens for travel applications.

Mike Burnhill, European Technical Support Manager at Canon Europe, stated that removing the mechanical constraints of SLR mirrors has allowed the company to refine its optical engineering. The shift is presented as a central element of the EOS R system development strategy.

These additions follow the initial launch of the EOS R system, which introduced four high-performance lenses. The new releases represent a move toward filling out the system's professional-grade coverage.
