Canva Launches AI Design Tool Aimed at Reducing Automated Content Errors

Canva launched Brush, a new AI tool specifically trained to mimic human design processes rather than generating entire images from scratch. Unlike standard image generators that often create incoherent compositions, Brush is designed to interpret layout, layers, and style to facilitate incremental edits, aiming to reduce the visual cliches often associated with automated design.

The tool addresses a frequent limitation in current generative AI: the 'domino effect,' where a small edit causes unintended changes across an entire file. According to the company, Brush isolates specific design elements, allowing users to modify text or styles while maintaining consistency. Canva reports that the model functions 69% faster than its predecessor and reduces processing costs by 46%.

Developed by the company’s internal 160-person research team, Brush follows the release of the Canva Craft image model. Currently, the feature is limited to Canva Pro subscribers, with the firm indicating plans to integrate brand kit references and file attachments in future updates.

The release comes amid broader industry criticism regarding the proliferation of low-quality, AI-generated graphic content. Canva’s development seeks to shift AI usage from one-off generation toward a collaborative editing workflow, which the company claims will allow for more granular user control over final outputs.
