Canva Rebrands as AI Company Amid Accelerated Product Development
Online design platform Canva has redefined itself as an AI-first company, focusing on integrating new technologies and accelerating product cycles. This strategic shift aims to leverage AI's potential and maintain rapid innovation.

Canva, the popular online design platform, has undergone a significant strategic shift, with the company now defining itself as an AI company rather than primarily a design company. This redefinition signals an adaptation to the rapidly evolving technological landscape, particularly with the increasing impact of artificial intelligence.
According to Cameron Adams, cofounder and chief product officer at Canva, the company has experienced an "interesting" year. Despite the challenges brought by rapid AI advancements, the leadership has not been overly concerned about the so-called "SaaSpocalypse." Instead, Canva has focused on building strong internal capabilities in AI and machine learning, which has enabled accelerated product development.
Adams emphasized that Canva has developed its own unique blend of AI, which is not merely a repackaging of existing large language models but is based on deep technical research and proprietary intellectual property. This internal expertise has led to a new product release cadence, reminiscent of the company's early startup days, focusing on delivering customer value on a weekly basis.
To manage the rapid pace, Canva has internally adopted a methodology akin to "speedboats" rather than a single large "Titanic." Teams receive daily updates with new features to test, improving quality and user experience. For external customers, major changes are rolled out more cautiously, while smaller improvements and new workflows can be integrated more seamlessly.
The company also encourages its employees to experiment with various AI tools, freeing up time for exploration. An initiative like "AI Discovery Week" allowed employees to set aside their usual work to explore new possibilities, resulting in hundreds of new project ideas and highlighting Canva's commitment to continuous innovation.
