Canva has announced its first major round of layoffs in the company’s 13-year history, impacting 22 percent of its global staff. Approximately 1,271 employees will be affected as the company undergoes a significant internal reorganization aimed at simplifying its structure.

CEO Melanie Perkins cited the first sustained slowdown in the company’s growth in a decade as the primary catalyst for the change. The restructuring will merge the company’s product, growth, and platform groups into a unified product organization to remove management layers and reduce bureaucratic friction.

Departing employees are slated to receive at least six months of salary and 12 months of healthcare coverage, depending on regional regulations. With operations across 37 countries, the company is managing the wind-down according to local labor laws.

While market analysts have pointed to the rising pressure from AI-driven competitors as a potential factor in the downsizing, the company’s official communication attributed the shift to internal organizational needs rather than external market competition.
