Car Becomes Rolling Supercomputer with Ethernet Backbone

Fraunhofer researchers are developing a new vehicle architecture where a single central server manages all the car's electronic functions. The new system utilizes a real-time Ethernet network.

Fraunhofer researchers are developing a new vehicle architecture that transforms cars into rolling supercomputers. This network-based system replaces the complex and heavy wiring harnesses and numerous separate computers found in today's vehicles with a single, centralized "car server." The project is named CeCaS (Central Car Server-Supercomputing für Automotive).

The new architecture is based on a real-time Ethernet network specifically designed for automotive requirements. This technology enables centralized management of all electronic components and optimizes data transfer between the vehicle's various systems. The goal is to facilitate the construction of highly automated and connected vehicles, as it significantly reduces weight and manufacturing costs.

The core of the system is "Time Sensitive Networking" (TSN), which ensures real-time and reliable data transmission. The system automatically prioritizes tasks; for example, commands to the braking system receive higher priority than air conditioning settings. This ensures that critical functions operate without delay, even when the car processes enormous amounts of data in real-time.

Benefits of the centralized architecture also include ease of use and upgradability. The vehicle's software can be updated wirelessly via Wi-Fi, eliminating the need for workshop visits for updates. Furthermore, the system's flexibility and scalability allow for the integration of new functionalities in the future. The German government supports the project as part of a broader digitalization initiative.
