Car repair workshop costs rise significantly
Workshop hourly rates in Germany have increased faster than general inflation since 2017. Costs for mechanical, electrical, bodywork, and paint jobs have seen notable price hikes.
The cost of car repairs in Germany has become significantly more expensive since 2017, with workshop hourly rates rising faster than the general inflation rate. In 2022, an hour of work in a typical car repair shop cost an average of 173 euros, an increase of 5.5 percent compared to the previous year. Paintwork was even more expensive, costing 188 euros per hour, up 5.8 percent.
This trend continues a pattern observed since 2017, where workshop costs have outpaced inflation. While the consumer price index rose by approximately 14 percent between 2017 and 2022, average hourly rates in workshops increased by 28 percent, and for paint shops by 30 percent. In contrast, automobile liability insurance premiums have slightly decreased during the same period.
The combination of higher labor costs and increased prices for replacement parts leads to rising repair costs after accidents. In 2022, the average cost of a vehicle property damage claim for car liability insurers was around 3700 euros, an 8.4 percent increase from the prior year. This figure was approximately 2700 euros in 2017.
Analysis also reveals substantial price differences for car repairs among Germany's largest cities. Munich shows the highest average hourly rates at approximately 174.52 euros, followed by Hamburg. Leipzig emerged as the most affordable city, with an average hourly rate of only 126 euros. This represents a 38.5 percent difference in labor costs between Munich and Leipzig.
Consumers can potentially save on repair costs by exploring various options. Independent workshops often use parts from independent suppliers, which can be cheaper. Even brand-name workshops now offer more affordable parts lines or service packages for cars older than four or five years. Using used parts or employing "Smart Repair" techniques for minor damage like scratches or dents can also lead to cost savings.
