Carbios and FROMM Launch Home-Compostable Air Cushions
Biotechnology firm Carbios and packaging systems provider FROMM have developed Airpad™ BIO Home Compost®, the first fully biodegradable air cushion for protective packaging.

Biotechnology company Carbios and packaging systems provider FROMM have partnered to develop and commercialize Airpad™ BIO Home Compost®. These new, fully biodegradable air cushions are designed to protect goods during transport and storage while minimizing environmental impact.
The products are certified with the TÜV Austria "OK Compost Home" label, guaranteeing their disintegration under home composting conditions in less than six months. The new air cushions reduce the carbon footprint by 85% compared to protective paper and are four times lighter, improving logistical efficiency and reducing material waste.
Carbios' technology enables the production of these cushions from bio-based materials that break down naturally without leaving harmful residues. This addresses the growing demand for more sustainable packaging solutions, particularly in sectors like transport and logistics where recycling of packaging materials can be challenging.
The collaboration with FROMM ensures the new air cushions are compatible with existing packaging workflows, offering a ready-to-use solution for companies aiming to enhance their packaging sustainability without significant changes to their production lines.
