CARBIOS Develops Biorecycling Technology for Plastics and Textiles

French biotechnology firm CARBIOS is developing and industrializing biological solutions for plastic and textile recycling. The company utilizes enzyme-based processes, inspired by nature, to break down plastics, aiming to reduce pollution and accelerate the transition to a circular economy.

CARBIOS's core technologies focus on the biorecycling of PET plastics and the biodegradation of PLA plastics. These technologies are currently being scaled up for industrial and commercial applications. The enzyme-driven approach facilitates the breakdown of polymers into their original monomers, allowing for their reuse and reducing reliance on virgin materials.

The company collaborates with several major brands across the cosmetics, food, and apparel sectors. Nestlé Waters, PepsiCo, and Suntory Beverage & Food Europe are part of a packaging consortium established with CARBIOS and L'Oréal. In the textile sector, CARBIOS works with brands such as On, Patagonia, PUMA, PVH Corp., and Salomon.
