French biotechnology firm CARBIOS has expanded its patented enzymatic recycling technology for PET plastics. The company successfully completed an initial pilot run of its new process, which addresses recycling challenges for PET plastic derived from consumer packaging.

The new technology uses enzymes to depolymerize PET plastic into its basic monomers. These monomers can then be purified and reused to produce virgin-quality PET plastic. This closed-loop approach aims to significantly reduce reliance on fossil fuels and decrease plastic waste.

CARBIOS CEO Emmanuel Ladent stated that the development marks a significant step toward industrial-scale deployment. The company's technology primarily targets the recycling of PET (polyethylene terephthalate), commonly used in food and beverage containers, which often poses difficulties for traditional mechanical recycling methods.

The successful pilot phase paves the way for broader commercialization. CARBIOS has previously secured substantial funding and partnerships to advance its technology's development and industrial adoption, reflecting the industry's growing interest in sustainable plastic waste management solutions.
