Carbios showcases commercial applications of enzymatic PET recycling
French biotech firm Carbios presents evidence of successful pilot projects using 100% enzymatically recycled PET plastic in consumer products, including cosmetic bottles, beverage containers, and textiles.
Clermont-Ferrand, France – Biotech company Carbios has showcased a range of commercial applications leveraging its proprietary enzymatic recycling technology for PET plastic. The company reports successful pilot projects across various sectors, including packaging, fashion, and footwear, demonstrating the technology's scalability and its contribution to a circular economy.
Carbios' technology breaks down PET plastic into its original monomers, which can then be re-polymerized into new PET plastics without any loss of quality. This process has been validated for producing high-performance beverage bottles, cosmetic packaging, and luxury goods. The company emphasizes that its recycled material is suitable for closed-loop systems, significantly reducing reliance on virgin plastics and the consumption of fossil fuels.
Several well-known brands are already collaborating on developing and launching products with enzymatically recycled PET. L'Occitane en Provence, for instance, has introduced its first bottle made from 100% enzymatically recycled PET. Biotherm also utilizes this technology for certain cosmetic bottles. In the fashion industry, Carbios has partnered with multiple brands to create the world's first fully fiber-to-fiber biorecycled garments.
The company has also demonstrated the technology's applicability in high-performance footwear and technical textiles through collaborations with entities like Michelin and Salomon. These initiatives highlight the versatility of enzymatic recycling and its potential to deliver genuinely circular solutions to plastic waste challenges. Carbios is continuing to commercialize its technology with the aim of expanding its global reach.
