CARE Package Marks 80 Years Amidst Growing Humanitarian Challenges

The CARE package marks its 80th anniversary this July, over eight decades after the first shipments arrived in Germany during the post-World War II era. In 1946, approximately 36,000 CARE packages provided relief to a war-ravaged and starving German population. Weighing nearly 20 kilograms and filled with essential foodstuffs like milk powder, fat, and sugar, these packages quickly became a symbol of humanity and hope.

CARE packages also played a crucial role during the Berlin Airlift, constituting about 60 percent of private aid sent to the blockaded city. Under these extreme circumstances, the packages, containing items such as clothing, tools, and food, reached civilians enduring severe hardship.

However, humanitarian aid today faces significant obstacles. Escalating conflicts, widespread hunger, poverty, and displacement have increased the global need for assistance. Simultaneously, many countries, including Germany, are implementing substantial funding cuts to humanitarian aid. These reductions threaten the operations of local aid organizations and impede rapid responses to crises.

CARE and other humanitarian organizations are calling for a renewal of international solidarity and reliable support for people in need. They emphasize that these funding cuts endanger lives and create future crises, particularly impacting healthcare and basic human rights.
