Cargill: 2 Billion People Worldwide Lack Access to Safe Drinking Water

Globally, approximately 2 billion people still lack access to safe drinking water, presenting a significant challenge to global health and well-being. United Nations reports indicate that water challenges such as scarcity, pollution, and degraded water ecosystems contribute to the problem.

Access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene—collectively known as "WASH"—are interconnected essentials. A lack of these can lead to severe consequences, including school absenteeism, waterborne diseases, and even fatalities. Without a fourfold increase in progress, billions may face a lack of safe water and sanitation by 2030.

Climate change is closely linked to water availability. Long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns caused by the climate crisis can worsen water scarcity. An estimated half of the world's population experiences water scarcity for at least part of the year. Conversely, practices that improve water quality and availability can help build climate resilience.

In Ghana, Cargill's initiatives have improved the lives of local residents, such as 12-year-old Obaa, by facilitating access to clean water at her school. In southwestern Ghana, where lack of water safety is a significant issue, such interventions ensure children can focus on their studies and adults can dedicate time to productive activities like farming, rather than spending it fetching water.
