Cargill advances palm oil traceability toward sustainable future

Agribusiness giant Cargill has reported significant progress in the traceability and sustainability of its palm oil supply chain. According to the company's end-2015 progress report, 97% of the palm oil it purchased could be traced to the mill level.

Cargill set a goal in July 2014 to establish a 100% transparent, traceable, and sustainable palm oil supply chain by 2020. The company views the achieved 97% mill-level traceability at the end of 2015 as a critical step toward this objective.

Beyond traceability, Cargill's focus for 2016 will shift to supplier engagement to improve sourcing practices. The company is collaborating with partners such as Proforest and TFT to strengthen relationships with its palm oil suppliers and assist them in developing sustainable practices that align with Cargill's palm oil policy.

The company is also actively participating in the development of industry standards and promoting collaboration with stakeholders like the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) and the Indonesian Palm Oil Pledge (IPOP). The aim is to drive legislative changes that support sustainable palm oil production and harmonize various traceability methodologies.
