Cargill Enhances Employee Safety with Robotics and Drones

Agribusiness giant Cargill has introduced several new technological solutions to enhance employee safety at its facilities worldwide. The new systems focus on reducing worker exposure to hazardous situations and minimizing injury risks in heavy and repetitive tasks.

At its Fullerton, California facility, Cargill has deployed 11 laser-guided vehicles (LGVs) that handle the movement of pallets weighing between 2,000 and 3,000 pounds. These vehicles, affectionately nicknamed "R2D2s," significantly reduce the need for employees to be in close proximity to mobile powered equipment like forklifts, thereby decreasing the risk of serious injuries and fatalities.

Additionally, Cargill is utilizing drones for facility inspections. The company's Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) organization employs drones instead of personnel for hazardous inspection tasks, such as working at heights. This minimizes employee exposure to high-risk environments. An investment in a drone technology company ensures Cargill remains at the forefront of these capabilities.

In Changsha, China, the animal nutrition and health facility has implemented robotic arms to move heavy products between pallets. These robots are equipped with comprehensive safety measures, including a three-key entry system and a safety light curtain, ensuring employees cannot access the machinery while it is operational. This reduces the likelihood of accidents during robotic operations.

Through these technological investments, Cargill aims to foster a safer working environment and reduce accidents, aligning with its goal of ensuring all employees return home safely every day.
