Cargill Implements Sustainability Measures in Cocoa Supply Chain

Agricultural giant Cargill is focusing on enhancing sustainability and reducing emissions throughout its cocoa supply chain. The company is implementing various new technologies to improve processes from farm to finished product.

Cargill states its ambition is to build one of the world's most sustainable food supply chains. To achieve this, the company has introduced electric barges for transporting cocoa beans to its facilities in the Netherlands. Additionally, it is utilizing biofuel (BIO LNG) trucks to move semi-finished cocoa products to its chocolate manufacturing sites in Belgium.

These initiatives are part of a broader effort to reduce Cargill's supply chain greenhouse gas emissions by 30% per ton of product sold by 2030. Other sustainability projects include a solar-powered warehouse employing automated vehicles and the use of cocoa shells as fuel at a plant in Ivory Coast.

The company is also working to cut packaging waste by using ISO tanks for transporting cocoa butter from Ghana and Ivory Coast to Europe. Cargill emphasizes collaboration with customers to develop sustainable solutions without compromising on quality or reliability.

Cargill, headquartered in the United States, is a major player in the global agriculture and food industry. The company has increased its focus on sustainability initiatives across its extensive operations in recent years.
