Cargill Pursues Decarbonization and Digitalization in Shipping

Cargill's Ocean Transportation (OT) business is actively charting a course toward decarbonization and digitalization in global shipping. The unit's leader, Jan Dieleman, recently assumed the role of chairman for the Global Maritime Forum, an international non-profit aiming to address key challenges in seaborne trade.

Dieleman stated that the business is focused on doing the right thing while also growing a strong unit that can thrive in the future. This strategy has led them to prioritize digitalization and decarbonization. For example, Cargill partners with ZeroNorth, utilizing its Optimise software to measure vessel performance, reduce carbon emissions, and enhance earnings within the tramp shipping industry.

Cargill OT, which operates as a charterer rather than a shipowner, has transformed into a modern organization focused on customer needs and industry leadership. The company is involved in several industry initiatives, including the Sea Cargo Charter and the Getting to Zero coalition, aiming to drive change across the maritime sector.

Furthermore, Cargill emphasizes the importance of crew welfare and improving working conditions for seafarers, even those not directly employed by Cargill. Dieleman highlighted that this focus on human well-being is essential, given the critical role seafarers play in transporting over 200 million tonnes of goods globally.
