Cargill, the world's largest privately held company in food and agriculture, has released its new ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) report. The report aims to provide a clear explanation of what the acronym ESG signifies within the company's business operations and global supply chains.
The report highlights Cargill's commitment to building a more sustainable world. CEO Brian Sikes states that Cargill's position within the food system presents both an opportunity and a responsibility to deliver meaningful solutions to global challenges. The company is particularly focused on driving change through agriculture to create value for customers, farmers, and communities.
Regarding environmental (E) factors, Cargill is scaling regenerative agriculture practices designed to reduce emissions contributing to climate change, improve water quality, and enhance soil health. Examples mentioned include building an advanced biodiesel plant in Ghent, Belgium, that converts waste into renewable fuel.
On the social (S) front, Cargill emphasizes its work in nourishing people and creating economic opportunities. Initiatives like Hatching Hope, aiming to improve nutrition and economic livelihoods for 100 million people by 2030, and the Black Farmer Equity Initiative, connecting underrepresented farmers to markets, are cited as key examples. Pilar Cruz, Cargill's chief sustainability officer, underscores prioritizing people within the workplace, supply chain, and communities.
For governance (G), Cargill relies on ethics and compliance, grounded in its Code of Conduct and Guiding Principles. Anna Richo, Cargill's general counsel and chief compliance officer, states the company's ambition to be the most ethical and trusted provider of sustainable products and services.
