Global food corporation Cargill has reported significant growth in the plant-based food sector. The market is now valued at $7 billion and is experiencing a 27% year-over-year growth rate, more than double the overall food and beverage market.

Consumer demand has extended beyond basic meat and dairy alternatives to a wider range of products, including items like mushroom jerky and egg substitutes. Industry analysts predict that continued product innovation and diversification will be crucial for future success in this rapidly evolving segment.

The appeal of plant-based options is no longer limited to vegans and vegetarians. A broader consumer base is seeking nutritious choices that incorporate more plants into their diet while aligning with environmental, social, and animal welfare values. The COVID-19 pandemic further accelerated this trend, increasing consumer awareness of the impact of dietary choices on personal health and the environment.

Plant-based dairy alternatives remain the largest category, accounting for 35% of the total market. Plant-based meat alternatives have also been a strong driver, reaching $1.4 billion in sales with 45% growth in 2020. Innovations are now extending into snacks, such as plant-based jerky and vegetable-based chips, which saw 57% growth in 2020.
