Cargill continues to market scleroglucan, a nature-derived polysaccharide produced through bio-fermentation, highlighting its transition from industrial applications to the personal care sector.
Originally developed for enhanced oil recovery, scleroglucan was used to increase the viscosity of fluids, improving oil extraction efficiency. It also found application in thickening drilling muds and completion fluids.
Now, the ingredient, derived from sugar bio-fermentation, is being positioned for higher-value applications in personal care products. Its natural origin, biodegradability, and stability make it an appealing alternative to synthetic polymers.
Cargill offers scleroglucan under the Actigum™ brand name. According to the company, scleroglucan's non-ionic nature allows for use in various formulations, contrasting with some competitors. It is noted for being less sticky and stringy than xanthan gum.
Cargill has also developed Actigum™ VSX20, a blend of scleroglucan and xanthan gum. This combination aims to provide enhanced thickening and suspending properties for products like hair care and toiletries, aiming for a silky texture and shine.
