Cargill's Sunflower Oil Supply Chain Supports European Foodservice Customers

Agribusiness giant Cargill has streamlined its European sunflower oil supply chain, connecting farmers, processing, and bottling facilities to support consistent operations for foodservice customers. The company sources sunflower seeds from multiple European countries, including Romania, Bulgaria, and France, to enhance the flexibility and reliability of its supply.

Processing occurs at Cargill's multiseed crush and refinery in Amsterdam, utilizing renewable wind energy and a biomass boiler powered by cocoa shells to reduce emissions. The refined oil is then bottled at Cargill's Izegem facility in Belgium, one of Europe's largest edible oil bottling plants, where capacity has been expanded to meet growing customer demands.

By diversifying its sourcing across various countries, Cargill aims to reduce reliance on any single region, thereby improving the supply chain's resilience and stability. This is crucial in a market subject to weather fluctuations, logistical disruptions, and changing customer needs. The company offers two types of sunflower oil: High Oleic, known for superior frying performance due to its stability and longer fry life, and classic sunflower oil for versatile cooking applications.

The integrated supply chain is designed to ensure consistent product quality, reliable deliveries, and to help quick-service restaurants maintain uninterrupted service in a dynamic market. Cargill states this approach aids its customers in navigating a complex marketplace.
