Cargotec's Kalmar secures largest crane upgrade contract in Malaysia
Cargotec's Kalmar has secured its largest-ever crane upgrade contract worth over EUR 20 million for seven ship-to-shore cranes at Malaysia's Port of Tanjung Pelepas.

Cargotec's Kalmar division has won a contract to upgrade seven ship-to-shore (STS) cranes at the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) in Malaysia. The order, valued at over EUR 20 million, represents Kalmar's largest crane upgrade project to date globally. Site work is scheduled to commence in the third quarter of 2016.
PTP, Malaysia's most advanced container terminal, is situated on the busy shipping lane of the Straits of Malacca. The terminal processed 9.1 million TEU in 2015 and is equipped with 57 super post-panamax cranes and a substantial fleet of Kalmar equipment.
The upgrade project will increase the safe working load of the seven STS cranes, originally supplied by IMPSA, from 50 to 61 tonnes. The scope also includes modernizing the cranes' control and electrical systems, along with implementing other safety and capability enhancements. PTP is part of the MMC Ports group, the eighth largest port operator worldwide by container volume.
Collin Swee, Key Account Manager for MMC Ports at Kalmar, commented on the significance of the deal. "Upgrading the handling capabilities and safety features of existing cranes is a cost-effective solution for forward-thinking terminals," Swee stated. Kalmar's Crane Upgrade competence centre in Port Klang will manage the project execution for the Asia-Pacific region.
