Carnival Season Becomes a Field Day for Pickpockets

The carnival season, particularly during events like Germany's Fastnacht, draws large crowds to public spaces, creating prime opportunities for pickpockets. R+V Insurance expert Hanna Harsche warns that the risk of theft significantly increases in these crowded conditions.

Statistics from cities like Cologne indicate a high incidence of pickpocketing during the carnival period, with over 500 incidents reported in 2011 alone. Thieves often employ distraction techniques, such as the "spill" method, where they intentionally cause a mess on a victim's clothing. The stolen items are often not noticed until much later, complicating police investigations.

Typically, victims are left to cover the cost of stolen items like mobile phones or wallets themselves. Standard home or travel insurance policies generally do not cover simple theft unless violence or threats were involved. Specialized insurance for devices or valuables may offer additional protection.

R+V Insurance advises that reporting any theft to the police immediately is crucial for potential insurance claims. It also recommends minimizing valuables carried during festivities and securing them by distributing them across multiple pockets or using secure pouches worn close to the body.
