CATL to Deploy First Large-Scale Sodium-Ion Energy Storage Project in Central and Eastern Europe
CATL and Solarpro will jointly develop the region's first large-scale sodium-ion battery energy storage project in Lithuania. The project will utilize CATL's Tener Sodium energy storage system.

Chinese battery manufacturer CATL has signed an agreement with Solarpro, a renewable energy company operating in Central and Eastern Europe, to deploy its Tener Sodium energy storage system. The two companies plan to jointly develop the region's first large-scale energy storage project utilizing sodium-ion batteries later this year.
The project, slated for deployment in Lithuania, will feature CATL's Tener Sodium energy storage system. This system is designed for a cycle life of up to 15,000 cycles and is expected to operate reliably for 25 to 30 years. Its performance at low temperatures is a key feature, retaining 92% of its capacity at -20°C.
This capability makes the sodium-ion technology suitable for the harsh winter conditions experienced in Eastern European countries. The system's resilience in cold weather is particularly advantageous for the planned site in Lithuania, where temperatures can commonly fall between -15°C and -20°C.
CATL and Solarpro have a strategic partnership dating back to 2024. Their previous collaborations include a 150 MWh EnerC+ liquid-cooled battery energy storage system deployed in Bulgaria. More recently, in May of this year, they connected a 602 MWh Tener lithium battery energy storage system to Bulgaria's grid, increasing the country's total energy storage capacity by approximately 10%.
