CATL's China Lithium Mine Project Advances to Review Stage
CATL's Jianshanwan lithium mine project in China has completed its environmental impact assessment report and public consultation phase. The mine has been idle for one year.

Chinese battery giant CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd.) is moving forward with plans to potentially restart its Jianshanwan lithium mine in Jiangxi province. The mine, identified as the world's largest known lithium mica deposit, ceased operations in August 2023 when its mining permit expired, marking a full year of inactivity. Operations were previously managed by CATL's subsidiary, Jiangxi Era New Energy Mining Co. Ltd.
The environmental impact assessment (EIA) report and public participation statement for the Jianshanwan mine project have now completed their announcement phase as of August 7. The report is ready for submission for official review. This step is crucial for the mine's potential resumption of activities. Recent regulatory changes in China, including the classification of lithium as a strategic mineral, have necessitated a reassessment of mining permits and a change in the officially designated primary mineral to be extracted.
Furthermore, the revised "Mineral Resources Law," effective from July 2023, requires updated development plans to ensure comprehensive resource utilization. The company must also settle outstanding payments for utilized lithium resources and pass specific environmental accreditations for tailings management and ecological restoration. The completion of the EIA and subsequent regulatory approvals are prerequisites for the mine to recommence operations.
Officials in Yichun city, where the mine is located, have indicated that the EIA report will undergo expert review following its submission. This will be followed by legally mandated public notification periods before final approval is granted. Industry analysts in the region suggest that the mine could restart operations as early as the third quarter of this year, or by the end of the year, contingent on the efficiency of the approval process.
