Caverion to deliver heat pump plant utilizing data center waste heat in Kajaani
Caverion will deliver a heat pump plant with over 30 MW capacity to Kajaani, Finland, utilizing waste heat from data centers for the local district heating network. This facility is among the largest in Finland to harness data center heat.

Caverion is set to deliver a heat pump plant with a total heating capacity exceeding 30 megawatts for Loiste Lämpö, a Finnish district heating company, in Kajaani. The facility will recover waste heat generated by data centers and integrate it into the Kajaani district heating network. This recovered heat is projected to meet over 80% of the annual district heating demand in the Kajaani region.
The heat pump plant utilizes climate-neutral hydrocarbon technology and is positioned as one of Finland's largest facilities of its kind to use waste heat from data centers. The project is being implemented in phases; the first modules, totaling 12 megawatts, are scheduled for commissioning in May 2026, with the remaining three modules, adding 18 megawatts, expected to be completed in 2027. The initial phase covers approximately 600 square meters and includes the potential for future expansion.
Loiste Lämpö stated that the investment represents a concrete step in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and diversifying local energy production. The company selected Caverion based on its strong expertise and adherence to high safety and quality standards.
Caverion brings significant experience in demanding industrial and infrastructure projects in Finland, having participated in nine data center projects. The company employs natural refrigerants, such as isobutane, propane, and ammonia, in its heat pump plants, which do not release carbon dioxide into the environment.
