CB Insights: Mega-rounds captured 81% of Q2 venture funding
Venture funding saw significant concentration in Q2, with mega-rounds accounting for 81% of total capital raised. AI firm Anthropic alone represented over a third of mega-round dollars.

Venture capital funding experienced a notable concentration in the second quarter, with mega-rounds—deals exceeding $100 million—making up 81% of all capital deployed. This figure closely mirrors the record set in the previous quarter.
Analysis by CB Insights indicates that a substantial portion of this trend was driven by a single company, AI firm Anthropic, which secured $65 billion. This massive investment alone accounted for over one-third of all mega-round funding and propelled the company's valuation to $965 billion.
Collectively, Q2 saw $212.9 billion raised, marking the second-highest quarter on record. However, excluding Anthropic's significant contribution, the funding secured by other companies was considerably lower. The number of deals reached a decade low, and exits declined for the second consecutive quarter.
In separate news, European defense technology company Helsing announced it raised $1.8 billion in a Series E round, the largest private defense tech round in European history. This highlights growing investment in the sector, despite historical European VC hesitancy due to ESG constraints and other factors.
CB Insights' research points to a bifurcated venture market where capital is increasingly consolidating into fewer, larger deals. The firm regularly publishes analyses on venture capital trends.
