CD Sales in the US Show Unexpected Growth

CD sales in the United States have experienced a resurgence, with a 16 percent year-over-year increase in the first half of 2026, according to a new report from research firm Luminate. A total of 16.3 million CDs were sold during this period. This growth is reportedly driven by fans who recognize CDs as an accessible method to financially support their favorite musicians.

Luminate data indicates that factors such as "collection building, price accessibility, massive albums such as BTS' ARIRANG and a strong K-pop release schedule" fueled the sales increase. Notably, even without considering K-pop sales, the US market still saw a 6.7 percent rise in CD purchases.

The report also suggests a shift in consumer behavior, noting that some purchasers may not be buying CDs solely for listening purposes. This implies that the appeal of physical media extends beyond audio playback, potentially encompassing collecting and memorabilia.

This trend contrasts with the dominance of digital streaming services. The renewed interest in CDs could signal a broader consumer desire for tangible music formats and a more direct connection with artists, offering a clear way for fans to contribute to their careers.
