CDU/CSU Group Focuses on Strengthening Europe
Germany's CDU/CSU parliamentary group emphasizes the need to increase Europe's economic and defense independence.

Germany's Union parliamentary group (CDU/CSU) has highlighted the necessity of strengthening the European Union's independence and resilience in an unstable global landscape. Group leader Jens Spahn called for a reinforcement of the EU "in an era of great powers," where superpower competition defines the geopolitical landscape. According to Spahn, Europe's future will be determined by its own capacity to act.
In his address to the Bundestag, Spahn emphasized European strength built on unity, defense readiness, and economic power. He noted that while the transatlantic partnership with the United States remains crucial for Europe's security, the EU must develop its own independence through measures like free trade agreements. Spahn also criticized certain U.S. policies while emphasizing the need for continued dialogue.
During the week's session, the parliament also addressed foreign policy matters. EU foreign ministers agreed to list Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization, a long-standing demand by the CDU/CSU group. This action demonstrated the EU's ability to act cohesively under pressure.
Lawmakers also commemorated the victims of the Holocaust on the 81st anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. Auschwitz survivor Tova Friedman urged drawing lessons from history and decisively countering rising antisemitism. Additionally, the parliament passed a new law to protect critical infrastructure from sabotage and terrorist attacks.
