Celebrities Demand AI Deepfake Regulations After Explicit Video

Indian film celebrities are demanding swift action and stringent regulations on AI-generated deepfakes after a sexually explicit deepfake video featuring actors Janhvi Kapoor and Jr NTR went viral. The incident has prompted widespread condemnation and calls for government intervention to curb the misuse of artificial intelligence.

Actress Janhvi Kapoor described the non-consensual creation and distribution of such content as deeply violating and bordering on sexual assault, noting that it affects many women. Co-star Jr NTR echoed these sentiments, urging the central and state governments to enact strong legislation against AI misuse.

Industry representatives have indicated plans to engage with political leaders, including Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, to address the issue. The focus is on developing strategies to prevent the spread of malicious synthetic media and ensure accountability for its creators.

This event follows previous incidents where authorities have issued advisories to social media platforms to remove deepfake content. Current regulations mandate the takedown of AI-generated or synthetically altered content within three hours, though challenges remain in completely eradicating such material from the internet.

Discussions are also underway regarding potential preventative measures, such as linking national identification (Aadhaar) to social media accounts to enhance user accountability and deter online abuse.
