Cellectis and Precision BioSciences Settle Gene Editing Patent Dispute

PARIS, France and RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, North Carolina – Gene editing firms Cellectis SA and Precision BioSciences have resolved a patent dispute involving engineered I-CreI meganuclease technology. The agreement entails a cross-licensing of certain genome engineering patents between the companies and the halting of ongoing lawsuits and patent challenges.

This resolution provides both companies with clear freedom to operate in the field of engineered I-CreI meganuclease genome engineering. This technology is considered a preferred method for many high-value applications due to its small size and high specificity, which are seen as advantages over alternative gene editing tools for delivery and safety.

Engineered meganucleases are described as versatile, capable of editing any gene within a genome. Both companies expressed optimism about the future development and application of the technology, particularly in areas such as agricultural biology and bioproduction.

The settlement allows both Cellectis and Precision BioSciences to concentrate on commercializing their respective technologies without the encumbrance of continued legal battles.
