CenterPoint Energy Selected for $50 Million U.S. Department of Energy Grant for Grid Upgrades

CenterPoint Energy has been chosen by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to receive a $50 million award aimed at strengthening and modernizing its electric grid. The funding is intended to support the deployment of advanced substation technology, positioning the company as one of the first U.S. utilities to implement such systems.

The federal award will bolster CenterPoint Energy's ongoing efforts to enhance electricity reliability and capacity for the rapidly growing Houston region. The company plans to install new grid-stabilizing technology from Siemens Energy, which is designed to respond quickly to changes in electricity demand and maintain service stability. These upgrades are expected to improve grid resilience, particularly during peak demand periods.

The investment is also projected to create over 500 local jobs for construction and installation. The project will be supported in part by the DOE's SPARK program, which focuses on modernizing electrical infrastructure to meet increasing energy demands nationwide.

CenterPoint Energy serves more than 2.9 million customers in the Greater Houston area. The company also owns and operates electric transmission and distribution, as well as natural gas distribution, in several other states.
