Central Asian Firms Explore New Capital Routes via Astana-Hong Kong

Central Asian companies are exploring new avenues to access international capital, seeking to diversify beyond traditional resource and trade connections. Speakers at a technology forum in Astana, Kazakhstan, suggested that the Hong Kong Stock Exchange presents a potential route for investors looking for more varied opportunities.

The discussion highlighted that Hong Kong's regulatory familiarity could enhance investor confidence in Central Asian startups. This was compared to the earlier draw of Nasdaq for Chinese startups due to its perceived regulatory standards. Companies in regions like Kazakhstan face financing demands that domestic markets may not fully meet.

Representatives from private capital noted that venture capital funds and investment banks can support companies at different growth stages. Askar Bilisbekov of Alem Capital Management mentioned their investment strategy includes regional and global funds.

The role of Central Asia's young, digital-native population was also emphasized. Their cross-cultural and international fluency, including proficiency in English and Chinese, is seen as an asset for companies aiming for multi-market operations. Thomas G. Tsao of Gobi Partners framed this as a potential "Digital Silk Road," connecting Central Asia's tech ecosystems with Asian investors.
