Chalmers centers to collaborate on 100% renewable electricity system by 2040
Two research centers at Chalmers University of Technology, SESBC and SEC, are joining forces to accelerate the transition to a fully renewable electricity system by 2040.

The newly established Swedish Electricity Storage and Balancing Centre (SESBC) and the Swedish Electromobility Centre (SEC) are initiating a collaboration to realize the vision of a 100 percent renewable electricity system by 2040.
The partnership aims to create a multidisciplinary and internationally competitive Swedish hub for research spanning the entire chain, from materials and components to control systems for the electrical grid. SESBC will focus on challenges in electricity storage and grid balancing, while SEC will continue its work on electric vehicles and charging infrastructure.
"We competed with several strong and established competence centers and are very happy with the outcome," said Massimo Bongiorno, Director of SESBC. Linda Olofsson, Director of SEC, stated that securing the funding was a tough process, making the news highly positive.
Both directors see significant opportunities for collaboration, particularly in the interaction between vehicles and the grid. Many researchers active in SESBC are already affiliated with SEC, which is expected to strengthen cooperation between research groups and intensify national sustainability efforts.
Both centers have secured substantial budgets, including funding from the Swedish Energy Agency, supporting their ambitious goals in renewable energy research.
