Chalmers develops augmented reality system for surgical tumor localization

A research team from Chalmers University of Technology and Sahlgrenska University Hospital has introduced an augmented reality (AR) system designed to assist surgeons during complex laparoscopic surgeries. By projecting a 3D visualization of tumors onto the surgeon's real-time camera view, the tool addresses the challenge of identifying deep-seated lesions that are not visible on the organ's surface.

The system utilizes a small, sticker-based QR code placed on the organ during surgery to serve as an artificial landmark. This, combined with pre-operative imaging data, allows the system to provide continuous navigation as the camera angle changes. The technology was successfully applied in a patient procedure in June 2026.

Commercial development is currently being managed by the spin-off company Navari Surgical, with support from Chalmers Ventures and national research funding. The team is now working toward regulatory approval and conducting clinical validation, with plans for an international study involving institutions in Norway and the United States. Researchers intend to adapt the platform for a broader range of laparoscopic applications.
