Chalmers develops lightweight materials from wood using microorganisms

Researchers in materials science and biotechnology at Chalmers University of Technology have initiated a new project to develop lightweight materials from wood-based raw materials using microbiological processing. The project aims to address challenges posed by climate change, microplastic pollution, and raw material shortages by replacing fossil-based materials with renewable alternatives.

Project coordinator Tiina Nypelö describes the project as a unique opportunity to combine materials engineering and biotechnology for the production of lightweight materials. Transportation and sports are identified as potential application fields. Nypelö's work combines forest products technology, materials science, and renewable resources to advance sustainable materials engineering.

The research leverages expertise in industrial biotechnology at Chalmers, particularly in the design and use of microorganisms to convert plant cell wall materials into biofuels, biochemicals, and new materials. Researchers Cecilia Geijer and Lisbeth Olsson are participating in the project, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration for creating novel materials and achieving societal impact.

Supported by European Union's FET Open funding, the four-year project has been granted three million euros. It involves three research groups from Chalmers, along with four partners from Austria and Spain. The objective is to develop new, sustainable, and lightweight materials with the potential for significant societal impact in the future.
