Chalmers focuses research on future building materials

Chalmers University of Technology has selected building materials and the built environment as the theme for this year's 'Materials for Tomorrow' event. The research focuses on how current material choices shape future societies and what new materials are needed to create a sustainable and functional built environment.

The university states that climate challenges, resource use, and urbanization are placing new demands on construction. Future building materials are expected to reduce emissions, improve resource efficiency, and withstand changing climate conditions. While concrete, steel, wood, and glass will remain important, their use will evolve, with an increase in optimized hybrid materials and circular economy solutions.

'The greatest potential likely lies in designing smarter materials and structures, using raw materials and residual streams more efficiently, and extending the service life of what we have already built,' says Professor Leif Asp from Chalmers' Materials Science Area of Advance. Future solutions are expected to be based on a combination of better materials, design, and a deeper understanding of material performance in real-world conditions.

The research also examines the impact of building materials on people and their interaction with the environment. Future materials may be dynamic, responding to factors like humidity or sunlight. Circularity and material reuse are also central themes. The Chalmers event will feature bio-based materials and the application of artificial intelligence in construction, highlighting the blurring boundaries between materials science, architecture, and design.
