Chalmers researcher recognized for development of cancer support model

Andreas Hellström, a senior lecturer at Chalmers University of Technology, has received recognition for his role in developing Kraftens hus. Launched in Borås in 2018, the centers offer psychosocial and physical support to individuals affected by cancer, addressing patient needs that remain unmet after active medical treatment concludes.

The project utilized action research, positioning patients as co-creators rather than subjects to help design the organization’s structure and services. By applying innovation principles typically reserved for technology or business sectors, the team established a neutral space that operates independently of the traditional healthcare system.

The initiative has since scaled into a national network across Sweden. The project has gained influence in national cancer care policy, demonstrating how academic research can be translated into public welfare solutions through multi-sector collaboration.
